Chances are you have at least one friend from the gym or yoga that swears by juices cleanses as a great way to flush toxins out of the body and stimulate weight loss. But are juice cleanses as amazing as the hype on Pinterest and Instagram say it is? And what are toxins? This blog will try to answer the things you need to know about juice cleanses.

The name pretty much speaks for itself: you consume nothing but juices mixed from various natural (and usually organic) fruits. The idea is to remove the burden of digesting food from our system.

The benefit of not having to digest food in our system is that it allows our digestive system, particularly our liver and kidneys, to devote all of its energy to detoxifying our stomachs and improving our overall health.
To clarify, these “toxins” come from all sorts of sources. We ingest chlorine from water sources, carbon monoxide from the air, and numerous preservatives and colorants from the food we eat. Toxins can cause inflammation in the body and contribute to a weakened immune system. This, in turn, can cause body aliments such as headaches, asthma, and arthritis and can increase the likelihood of heart disease and cancer. While our liver and kidneys are built to remove these toxins, proponents of juice cleanses believe that the amount of toxins in average food today is too much for our bodies to handle.
Does It Really Promote Weight Loss?
Yes and no. As in, yes you will lose weight but no, you won’t keep it off. When on a juice cleanse, you’re not eating normal food, which has various levels of water in it. With normal eating removed, you’re taking in much less water and therefore lose water weight. However, once the juice cleanse is over and you go back to regular food, you’ll gain that water weight right back. So don’t expect cleansing to be a silver bullet for weight loss.

Relying on juice cleanses alone might help detoxify your body, but it will leave it starving for other forms of foods and nutrients. Prolonged juice cleanses can make you very sickly and weak. But that is not to say you can’t incorporate juice mixes into a healthy diet. It is a great way to get your vegetables and round out your meals. Juice mixes can keep your digestion strong and your immune system high, but only by working with other non-processed foods. What I’m trying to say is: think moderation. A cleanse where you have nothing but juices is a harmful extreme to your body.
